On September 21, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:15 p.m. and responded to lost motorcyclists near the Kipapa Ridge Trail in Waiawa with 5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:27 p.m. and secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that three motorcycle riders were travelling off-road between the Kipapa Ridge Trail and the Waiawa Prison for approximately three hours and became lost due to darkness. With 52 percent of battery life left on a cell phone, HFD dispatchers were able to obtain their geolocation and provide the latitude and longitude coordinates to Air 1. Equipped with night-vision goggles, the air team located the lost motorcyclists. Air 1 inserted a rescue person to the motorcyclists’ location at 7:57 p.m. where he performed a medical assessment to ensure no one was injured before preparing them for extraction. After hoisting the motorcyclists safely onboard, Air 1 transported them to the landing zone, where they declined any medical care at 8:47 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injury.
