On March 17, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:09 a.m. and responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a city bus collision into a tree while traveling west bound near the Vineyard Boulevard and Pua Lane intersection in Kalihi with five units staffed with 18 personnel.
The first unit arrived at 7:14 a.m. and reported one male, the driver of the bus, pinned in the driver seat. Crews stabilized the vehicle and utilized hydraulic rescue tools to unpin the diver. The driver was extricated at 7:40 a.m. and medical care was quickly transferred to an on-scene Emergency Medical Services unit.
There were no other reported passengers or vehicles involved.
All HFD personnel were accounted for.
While performing the rescue, three fire fighters suffered multiple bee stings from a beehive living in the tree that was struck. An additional EMS unit arrived to provide a medical evaluation. The three fire fighters refused any further care or transport to the hospital.
