On March 20, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 12:41 a.m. and responded to campers at Keaʻau Homesteads Road in Mākaha with 10 units staffed with 32 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:24 a.m. to a group of 72 campers and 2 dogs in need of evacuation from the campgrounds due to hazardous weather conditions.
Fire fighters gathered the campers and relocated the group to a nearby safe area to shelter in place. Air 1 airlifted campers and extracted them to Waiʻanae Intermediate School. The Hawaiʻi National Guard provided additional aerial resources to assist in airlifting campers.
The last campers were extracted at 1:15 p.m. and the group was shuttled by bus to a shelter at Nānākuli High School. Two campers were transferred to on scene Emergency Medical Services for treatment.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries reported.
