TWO-ALARM RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FIRE EXTINGUISHED IN KALIHI

On March 29, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 12:36 a.m. for a building fire near 1802 Akone Place in Kalihi and responded with 10 units staffed with 39 personnel. While en route to the scene, the first-responding unit observed smoke visible and upgraded the incident to a second-alarm status. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:46 a.m. and encountered heavy smoke and flames emanating from the rear of one of two two-story residential structures.

Fire fighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive defensive fire attack on the primary residence, which had heavy smoke and flames on the second floor. Crews simultaneously conducted aggressive fire suppression operations on both structures, applying water on the fire at 12:55 a.m., bringing it under control at 1:08 a.m., and extinguishing it fully at 1:30 a.m. All searches confirmed that no occupants were inside the structures at the time of the incident. Fire fighters then conducted overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hot spots and check for hidden fire within walls and other void spaces, ensuring the fire had not spread further.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries reported. The American Red Cross was notified to assist eight displaced adult residents.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s origin and cause as well as to provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report is complete.
