On May 29, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 6:19 p.m. and responded to a building fire at 1220 10th Avenue in Kaimuki with 6 units staffed with 22 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 6:25 p.m. to find light smoke emanating from a small, single-story residential building.
Firefighters established a water supply and initiated an offensive fire attack using handlines. Upon entering the structure, crews located a smoldering fire with flames. The fire was declared fully extinguished at 6:48 p.m. Searches of the structure confirmed that no people were inside at the time of the incident; however, firefighters rescued four animals from the residence. Two dogs were found alive and survived, while two cats were located unresponsive and deceased.
Following extinguishment, firefighters conducted overhaul operations to eliminate remaining hot spots and inspect between walls and concealed spaces for hidden fire extension, ensuring the fire had not spread beyond the area of origin.
All HFD personnel were accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross was notified to assist the family and pets who had been displaced as a result of the fire.
An HFD Fire Investigator has been assigned to determine the origin and cause of the fire and to assess the extent of the damage. An update will be provided upon completion of the investigation.
