HIKER RESCUED ON THE PUU O HULU TRAIL IN MAILI

On July 1, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:13 p.m.
for an injured hiker on the Puu O Hulu Trail in Maili and responded with 5 units staffed
with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:22 p.m, established command
and ascended the trail on foot. The second-arriving unit secured a landing zone nearby.

It was reported that a male in his 70s was hiking with a companion when he fell,
suffered an injury and was unable to descend the trail on his own. The unit on foot
arrived at the hiker’s location at 3:34 p.m., conducted a medical assessment, and
provided basic life support. Rescue personnel were then inserted to the hiker’s location
to package him for extraction. Air 1 safely transported the hiker to the landing zone and
medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 4:00 p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
