CAUSE OF BUILDING FIRE IN MAKAHA WAS INCENDIARY

UPDATE: The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) Investigator has classified the cause of
the fire that occurred in the early morning hours of April 7, 2023, at 84-1001 Lahaina
Street, as incendiary. The area of fire origin was a bedroom. The damage estimate is
$650,000 to the property, $20,000 to its contents, and $5,000 damage to a neighboring
property.

On April 7, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:31 a.m.
for a building fire near 84-933 Lahaina Street in Makaha and responded with 12 units
staffed with 35 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:39 a.m. to find heavy fire
from the ground floor of a two-story, single-family home.

Fire fighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with
handlines. Four adults were able to exit the building safely, however while performing a
search on the second floor, an adult male dog was found conscious with severe smoke
inhalation exposure. Fire fighters provided basic life support treatment for the dog until
care could be transferred to the Hawaiian Humane Society. All other searches for
occupants resulted in confirming that there was no one else in the building. After the
fire was under control at 1:59 a.m., overhaul techniques were performed to look for
hidden fire in void spaces to confirm that the fire did not extend into adjacent areas of
the building. The fire was reported to be extinguished at 2:40 a.m. All HFD personnel
were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

The American Red Cross was requested to assist the four adult humans who are
displaced while the Hawaiian Humane Society was requested to assist the single dog
with advanced medical treatment and care.

The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire
as well as provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final
investigation report is completed.
