HIKER RESCUED FROM THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE WAIANAE

On February 18, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 4:46 p.m. for a hiker in distress in the mountains above Waianae Valley Road and responded with 4 units staffed with 12 personnel.

It was reported that a female hiker in her 20s was hiking for approximately five hours and became ill. The hiker’s location was too far up the Kumaipo Trail for HFD personnel, on foot, to reach in a reasonable amount of time.  Air 1 located the hiker at 5:31 p.m. and inserted rescue personnel to her location. The hiker was medically assessed, and it was decided that she would be flown out on Air 1. The hiker was safely transported to the landing zone at 5:54 p.m., where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services.

HFD concluded this incident with no injuries reported by personnel.
