HIKER RESCUED FROM MOUNTAINS ABOVE MOANALUA VALLEY

On March 3, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:58 a.m. for an injured female hiker in the mountains above Moanalua Valley. HFD responded with 4 units staffed with 12 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park at 8:14 a.m.

It was reported that a husband and wife were hiking when the wife fell and suffered an injury. The cell phone connection was lost during the 911 call but a preliminary location showed them to be about 1.25 miles up the narrow Kamananui Valley Road at the top of Moanalua Valley.

HFD personnel made their way up the road in an HFD SUV and reached the hiker at 8:32 a.m. The hiker was medically assessed and basic life support administered while she was transported back to Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park at 8:47 a.m. where medical care was transferred to EMS.

HFD concluded this incident with no injuries reported by personnel.

The HFD reminds the public to hike safely and provides the following hiking safety tips:
Bring Your Cell Phone
In case of an emergency, your cell phone can be a lifesaver. Ensure that your battery is full prior to your hike. It is recommended to pack a back-up battery.
Get Information About The Trail
Prior to hiking, learn about the trail you intend to hike so you will know the route, where to start, and the degree of difficulty. When you get to the trail’s entrance, read and follow signage. Be aware of restricted or closed trails. Do not just rely on social media to get the information you need about a trail.
Stay Put
You will be found more quickly and reduce the chances of getting into further trouble, especially after dark, by staying in one place. This is why it is important to notify someone of your hike location and destination.
