HIKER RESCUED FROM SATELLITE TRACKING STATION TRAIL NEAR KAENA POINT

On September 5, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:10 p.m. and responded to an injured hiker off of the Satellite Tracking Station Trail near Kaena Point with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:25 p.m. from the westside of Kaena Point and ascended the trail on foot. Other units secured a landing zone on the northside of Kaena Point, at the Dillingham Airfield in Mokuleia, in preparation for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a 55-year-old male was hiking, sustained a medical condition, and could not continue on his own. Rescuers on foot were able to locate him about 400 feet below the trail and arrive at his side at 3:55 p.m., performed a medical assessment, and administered basic life support treatment. Air 2 was able to land nearby so he could be loaded into the aircraft and safely transported to the nearby landing zone where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 4:18 p.m.
