On September 20, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at12:49 p.m. and responded to two hikers on the Kawiwi Trail in Waianae with 5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m., secured a nearby landing zone and established command.
It was reported that two 28-year-old hikers became ill and were unable to descend the trail on their own. Air 1 inserted rescue personnel to the hikers’ location where a medical assessment was completed and basic life support provided. The hikers were then airlifted, one by one, to the nearby landing zone. Medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 1:48 p.m.
