On April 15, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:58 p.m. and responded to a lost hiker off of the Kuliʻouʻou Trail in Kuliʻouʻou with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:11 p.m., established command and ascended the trail on foot. An additional unit secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male was hiking for approximately four hours when he became lost and was unable to find his way back to the trail on his own. Air 1 located the hiker and lowered rescue personnel nearby. Rescue personnel arrived at the hiker’s side at 3:59 p.m. and prepared him for extraction. Air 1 hovered over the open area, hoisted the hiker safely onboard and safely transported him to the nearby landing zone at 4:10 p.m. where he declined medical care.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
