GAS LEAK TRIGGERS BUILDING EVACUATION IN IWILEI

On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:14 p.m., and responded to a gas leak reported at 525 Alakawa Street in Iwilei with five units, including a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) unit, staffed with 21 personnel.

The first unit arrived on scene at 1:24 p.m., established command, and confirmed that all occupants were evacuated. It was reported that gas was actively leaking inside of the building and that the leak was located near the loading dock. Fire fighters accessed the building through the loading dock doors, visualized a white vapor cloud throughout, and initiated ventilating the building. HFDʻs HazMat unit and the storeʻs Air Conditioning Technician were able to locate, isolate, and stop the leak at 1:54 p.m. Crews continued to ventilate the building and conduct air sampling to ensure there were no elevated readings. Occupants were allowed to return to their units once it was deemed safe to do so.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
