On August 11, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:19 p.m. and responded to a hiker in distress on the Maunawili Demonstration Trail in Kailua with 6 units staffed with 18 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:33 p.m. to establish command and a second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations. A third unit arrived at a separate location that was more advantageous to ascending the trail on foot.
It was reported that a female hiker in her 40s experienced a lower right leg injury and was unable to exit the trail on her own. Air 1 sighted the hikers and inserted a fire fighter at the hikers’ location at 2:11 p.m. HFD personnel conducted a medical assessment, provided basic life support, and prepared the hiker for transport. The hiker was then safely airlifted by Air 1 to the nearby landing zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 2:40 p.m. HFD personnel escorted the remaining hikers off the trail.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
