TWO-ALARM RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FIRE EXTINGUISHED IN WAIALAE

On August 16, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:03 a.m. for a building fire at 1379 Hunakai Street in Waialae and responded with 11 units staffed with 41 personnel.  The first unit arrived on scene at 5:09 a.m., observed flames and smoke from the front of the first and second floor of a two-story, four-dwelling, residential building and upgraded the incident to a second-alarm assignment.

Firefighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive offensive fire attack. A search was completed to confirm no occupants were inside of the structure. The fire was brought under control at 5:32 a.m. but the discovery of hidden fire between the roofing layers required an extensive overhaul.  The fire was fully extinguished at 7:11 a.m. and units remained at scene to remove loose roofing material that had the potential to become projectiles in the high winds from Tropical Storm Lala.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire and to assess damage. An update will be provided upon completion of the final investigation report.
