HIKER RESCUED NEAR DIAMOND HEAD CRATER SUMMIT IN KAHALA

On April 23, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 8:19 p.m. to investigate someone calling for help on the hillside of Diamond Head Crater in Kahala. The first unit arrived on scene at 8:24 p.m., established command, and confirmed a person was in need of assistance, approximately 200 feet below the Diamond Head Crater Summit. The incident was upgraded to a high-angle rescue
incident with a total of six units staffed with 17 personnel. A second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.

Personnel were unable to get to the hiker on foot due to steep terrain. Rescue personnel were inserted by Air 1 to the hiker’s location at 9:37 p.m., where they conducted a medical assessment and found the hiker to have an ankle injury. The hiker was then safely airlifted to the landing zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 9:45 p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
