On May 22, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 11:50 a.m. for a report of a gas leak at 99-1287 Waiua Place in Hālawa and responded with 6 units staffed with 24 personnel, including two Hazardous Materials units. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:01 a.m. established command.
It was reported that three workers suddenly started experiencing medical complaints and soon after it was determined there was an ammonia leak inside of the building. The workers were able to safely exit the building. Fire fighters arrived and confirmed that all occupants of the building were evacuated from the building and blocked any re-entry back into the building. Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly after and patient care was transferred at 12:15 p.m.
The HFD Hazardous Materials unit arrived and made entry to locate and shut off the main valve to isolate the leak. Entry onto Waiau place was restricted to local traffic only while responders worked to mitigate the leak. Once the leak was isolated, crews conducted air monitoring until the levels were deemed safe to re-enter. Waiau Place was reopened at approximately 8:50 p.m..
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
