SEARCH SUSPENDED FOR HIKER ON THE KAPALAMA TRAIL IN NUUANU

On July 3, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:55 p.m. and responded to a hiker in distress on the Kapalama Trail in Nu’uanu with 5 units staffed with 15 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 8:08 p.m. and secured a landing zone to prepare for a search by air.

It was reported that a male in his 20’s began hiking alone at 2:30 p.m. During the hike, he slid approximately 20 feet, was uninjured, but ended up in a precarious location.  Air 1 attempted to locate the hiker by air but was unable to do so due to poor visibility in the area.  Rescue personnel entered the trail from the Pali Lookout in an attempt to reach the hiker.  Due to trail conditions in the area, rescue personnel were unable to make it to the hiker’s location.  The hiker was advised to seek shelter in the area and units would return at first light.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
