On July 9, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:26 p.m. and responded to an injured hiker on the Pu’u Manamana Trail in Ka’a’awa with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel.  The first unit arrived on scene at 2:34 p.m. and ascended the trail on foot to begin the search by ground.  An additional unit secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a male in his late 30’s was hiking and sustained an injury to his lower leg and could not continue on his own. Rescuers on foot arrived at his side at 3:01 p.m., performed an initial medical assessment, provided basic life support treatment, and prepared him for extraction. Air 1 was able to arrive to the rescuers and perform the extraction.  Air 1 transported him to the nearby landing zone, where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 4:15 p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
