UPDATE: CAUSE OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FIRE IN MAKAKILO WAS ACCIDENTAL

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) Fire Investigator has classified the cause of the fire that occurred on July 20, 2026 at 92-1143 Hooko Place in Makakilo as accidental. It was determined that the fire originated in a vehicle parked in the carport of the structure when its overheating engine ignited residual engine oil which spread to the rest of the vehicle, adjacent vehicles, and surrounding combustibles including the carport. The estimated fire loss is $18,000, including $1,000 in property damage and $17,000 in damaged contents.
