HFD RESPONDS TO ROOF COLLAPSE IN KAIMUKI

On August 18, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:01 p.m. and responded to a confined space rescue reported at 3553 Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki with 8 units staffed with 32 personnel.  The first unit arrived on scene at 1:07 p.m. to find workers and occupants outside of a one-story restaurant.  Firefighters entered the restaurant and reported an approximately 40’ by 40’ section of the roof had collapsed.  Rescue unit personnel conducted searches to ensure no one was trapped under the collapsed section while hazardous materials unit personnel conducted air monitoring to ensure the collapse did not cause any gas leaks.  As a precautionary measure, neighboring units were also evacuated.

HFD’s Special Operation’s trailer was dispatched and rescue personnel utilized equipment to stabilize the remaining portion of the roof to mitigate any hazards and ensure the area was left in a safe condition.

Emergency Medical Services ambulances were on scene to assist and treat any injured people.  The scene was transferred to the Honolulu Police Department.
