On September 9, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:14 a.m. and responded to a hiker in distress on the Lēʻahi (Diamond Head Crater) Trail in Kahala with 6 units staffed with 18 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 10:21 a.m. and ascended the trail on foot. The second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for possible air operations.
It was reported that a female hiker in her 30s experienced a medical emergency on the trail and was unable to descend on her own. Fire fighters on foot arrived at the hiker’s location at 10:28 a.m. where they conducted a medical assessment, provided basic life support, and prepared her for extraction from the trail utilizing a single-wheel extrication device.
While providing care for the first hiker, it was reported that a second female hiker in her 40s, in the same vicinity on the trail, experienced a medical emergency and was also unable to descend on her own. It was determined that the hiker was able to walk down the trail with assistance from fire personnel.
Both hikers were safely taken to the trailhead where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 11:05 a.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
