On September 9, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:23 p.m. and responded to a hiker in distress on the Koko Crater Arch Trail with 6 units staffed with 18 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:37 p.m. and ascended the trail on foot. The second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male hiker in his 20s was experiencing medical complaints and was unable to descend the trail on his own. HFD personnel on foot arrived at the hiker’s location at 3:53 p.m. where they conducted a medical assessment and provided basic life support. Air 1 inserted a rescuer at the hiker’s location on the trail at 4:09 p.m. where he prepared the hiker for transport. The hiker was then hoisted into the aircraft and safely transported to the nearby landing zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 4:22 p.m. The sick hiker’s companion was assisted down the trail on foot to the Blowhole parking lot at 4:53 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
