UPDATE: CAUSE OF HIGH-RISE BUILDING FIRE IN WAIKIKI WAS ACCIDENTAL

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) Fire Investigator has classified the cause of the fire that occurred on September 14, 2026 at 1720 Ala Moana Boulevard in Waikiki as accidental. It was determined that the fire originated in an enclosed patio of the unit when resistance heating due to compression of an electrical cord led to heating of the electrical cord which ignited its insulation and nearby combustibles. The estimated fire loss is $40,000, including $30,000 in property damage and $10,000 in damaged contents.
