On September 29, 2026, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 11:15 a.m. and responded to a hiker in distress on the Lēʻahi (Diamond Head Crater) Trail in Kahala with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 11:24 a.m. and established command to coordinate rescue operations. The second-arriving unit ascended the trail on foot.
It was reported that a male hiker in his 70s experienced a medical emergency on the trail and was unable to continue. Fire fighters on foot arrived at the hiker’s location at 11:35 a.m. where they conducted a medical assessment, provided basic life support, and prepared him for extraction from the trail utilizing a single-wheel extrication device.
The hiker was safely taken to the trailhead where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 12:24 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
